Quick answer: "Velvet" strains are a loose family of cannabis cultivars that share a name, not a single lineage. The best-documented ones come from a few breeders: In House Genetics (Velvet Cookies, Velvet Breath, Velvet Skies, Velvet Pie), Exotic Genetix (Velvet Heat), Purple City Genetics (Velvet Lushers) and Swamp Boys Seeds (Velvet Glove). Red Velvet is a separate, well-known strain from Grandiflora Genetics. Below is what each one is, where it comes from, and how it's reported to taste and feel, based on public strain databases and breeder listings.
A quick note on our name: VelvetCBD isn't connected to any of these breeders or strains. People searching for velvet strains kept landing on our site, so we put together the guide we couldn't find anywhere else, with sources and with the gaps marked honestly.
How to read this guide
- Lineage, flavor and effects come from strain databases (AllBud, SeedFinder, GrowDiaries) and breeder or dispensary pages (Theory Wellness, Zamnesia). Sources are listed at the end.
- THC numbers are reported ranges from those listings. Real potency varies by grower, phenotype and batch. Always check the certificate of analysis (COA).
- Where sources disagree, we say so instead of picking one.

The In House Genetics Velvet Family
Most of the velvet names you'll see on menus trace back to one breeder. In House Genetics started with Velvet Cookies, crossed it with Purple Hulk to make Twisted Velvet, and then used Twisted Velvet as a parent for Velvet Breath and Velvet Skies. Velvet Cookies also went into Velvet Pie.
Velvet Cookies
The root of the family. GrowDiaries lists it as LA Cookies x Phantom Cookies, though SeedFinder records the parents as unknown, so treat that lineage as unconfirmed. Reported flavors are vanilla, cheese, citrus and grape over a nutty cookie base, with creative, euphoric and happy effects. Listed THC runs roughly 19-23%.
Velvet Breath
Twisted Velvet crossed with OGKB v2.1 (OG Kush Breath). AllBud describes it as about 60% indica with a cheesy, creamy, vanilla-kush flavor and a spicy-sweet edge. Reported effects are euphoric and relaxing but still creative. Listed THC is 20-25%, with an 8-9 week flowering time. Don't confuse it with Velveeta Breath, a different strain from ThugPug Genetics.
Velvet Skies
Twisted Velvet x Slurricane #7, a balanced hybrid with roughly a 60-day flower. GrowDiaries growers describe an earthy, pungent, sweet profile with grape and berry on top. It is reported as the more energetic, uplifted member of the family, with THC around 18.5-19%. One database credits a different breeder, but the SeedFinder listing points to In House Genetics.
Velvet Pie
Velvet Cookies x Black Cherry Pie, confirmed by both Theory Wellness and AllBud. Expect berry, cherry and nutty sweetness with a relaxing but mood-lifting, sociable effect. Listed THC is 20-22%. It is not the same as Red Velvet Pie, which has a different lineage.
Velvet Heat
Velvet Heat is listed by AllBud and GrowDiaries as an Exotic Genetix cross of Cake Mix x Red Pop, about 70% indica. Other databases give a different lineage (Velvet Kush x Ghost Train Haze) and call it sativa-leaning, so the genetics depend on which cut you're looking at. Reported flavors are berry, citrus, strawberry and cream with a diesel finish, plus cheese and vanilla in the aroma. Effects are described as euphoric and relaxing with a noticeable body high, and listed THC sits around 20%.
Velvet Lushers
A Purple City Genetics cross of Gushers x Gush Mints, sold as feminized seed with about a 63-day flower. Zamnesia describes creamy, sweet caramel and diesel flavors, and the breeder notes gas over floral, pine and lavender. Effects are reported as cheerful and energetic at low doses, settling into relaxation as you go. No reliable THC figure is published. If you like the Gushers side of this cross, our Gushers strain review covers that parent in detail. Not to be confused with Red Velvet Gushers.
Velvet Glove
Bred by Swamp Boys Seeds from GMO x Nookies, Velvet Glove is about 80% indica. Theory Wellness describes chem-cookie funk with sweet fruit and berry, while AllBud lists citrus, diesel, honey and sour notes. The reported effect is a quick mood lift followed by a heavy, sedating body high, with THC listed at 26-28%. It is also a parent of Butterstuff (Peanut Butter Breath x Velvet Glove).
Red Velvet
Red Velvet is the best-known name on this list. The original came from Grandiflora Genetics in Oakland and was sold through Cookies. Its genetics were never officially published. It is commonly reported as Lemon Cherry Gelato x Pina Acai, but other sources claim a GSC x Thin Mints x Pinkman background. Lit Farms also sells a seed version that may not match the original cut. Reported flavor is floral and sweet with cake-cookie notes and a gassy finish, with focused, creative energy that turns into body relaxation. Listed THC is around 27%. (For background on the Cookies side, see our Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) review.)
Red Velvet Cheesecake, sometimes searched as "Red Velvet x Cherry Cheesecake", is listed by Theory Wellness as an indica-leaning cross with chocolatey sweetness and rich fruit, an instant body buzz and light mental sedation. Which Red Velvet cut was used isn't stated.
More Velvet Strains
Vanilla Velvet
AllBud lists Vanilla Velvet as Runtz x Grapes N Cream, a 50/50 hybrid with vanilla, cream, grape and citrus flavors and some gas on the nose. Effects are calming, happy and uplifting, and listed THC is high, at 28-32%. The breeder isn't confirmed.
Velvet Cream
Ice Cream Cake x Medellin according to AllBud, a balanced hybrid with buttery, creamy, vanilla-fruit sweetness. Reported effects are creative, happy and sociable, with THC around 20-23%. It is often credited to Cookie Fam Genetics, but we couldn't confirm that from a primary source.
Velvet Purps
Velvet Purps, also called VP or Velvet Purple, was bred by Sun Roots Farm in Covelo, California. It is a JahGoo x Magic Bus cross, where Magic Bus is itself T2 x JahGoo, so it's partly a backcross. It is about 70% indica, with berry, grape, lavender and pine flavors and happy, relaxing effects. Listed THC ranges widely, from 16% in older listings to about 27% in recent grows.
Georgia Velvet and Velvet Kush
Both names show up in searches, but neither has a reliable lineage. AllBud lists Georgia Velvet as indica-dominant with lemon, citrus and woody-spice notes and very high THC, but its listed parentage names the strain as its own parent, so we can't confirm where it comes from. Velvet Kush appears on some retail menus without genetics, and AllBud uses the name for "Silver Velvet Kush". Treat claims about either one with caution until a breeder confirms them.
Velvet Strains That Are Easy to Mix Up
- Velvet Breath vs Velveeta Breath: different strains and different breeders.
- Velvet Pie vs Red Velvet Pie: different lineages.
- Velvet Lushers vs Red Velvet Gushers: different strains.
- Velvet Kush vs Velvet Krush: listed separately by AllBud.
- Red Velvet (Grandiflora/Cookies) vs seed versions: may not be genetically the same plant.
We also see searches for names like "Velvet Sundae", "Velvet Gas" and "Velvet Smooth". We couldn't find a breeder or database listing we trust for any of them, so we've left them out rather than guess.
Can You Find Velvet Strains as THCA Flower?
Rarely. Most of these are boutique genetics sold as seeds or in licensed dispensaries, not as hemp-derived THCA flower. If you're looking for similar profiles, the closest flower we carry by family is Gushers (a parent of Velvet Lushers), Lemon Cherry Gelato (often reported as a Red Velvet parent) and Girl Scout Cookies for the cookie side. Check each product's lab report before you buy.
Also note that federal hemp rules change on December 11, 2026, when THCA starts counting toward total THC. Our 2026 hemp ban guide explains what that means.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who breeds the velvet strains?
There's no single breeder. In House Genetics bred Velvet Cookies, Twisted Velvet, Velvet Breath, Velvet Skies and Velvet Pie. Exotic Genetix is credited with Velvet Heat, Purple City Genetics with Velvet Lushers, Swamp Boys Seeds with Velvet Glove, and Grandiflora Genetics with the original Red Velvet.
Is Velvet Heat indica or sativa?
Most listings, including AllBud and GrowDiaries, describe Velvet Heat as indica-leaning (about 70% indica, from Cake Mix x Red Pop). At least one database lists a sativa-leaning version with different parents, so it depends on the cut.
What is Velvet Lushers a cross of?
Velvet Lushers is Gushers x Gush Mints from Purple City Genetics, an indica-dominant hybrid with creamy, caramel and diesel flavors.
What strain is Red Velvet?
Red Velvet is a Grandiflora Genetics strain released through Cookies. Its official lineage was never published. It's commonly reported as Lemon Cherry Gelato x Pina Acai, though other sources disagree.
Is VelvetCBD related to these strains?
No. We're an online hemp retailer, and our name has nothing to do with these breeders. We wrote this guide because so many people searching for velvet strains were finding our site.
